CREON® MINIMICROSPHERES® Brand Capsules contain three digestive enzymes: lipase, for fats; amylase, for starches; and protease, for proteins. Taken orally with meals and snacks, CREON® MINIMICROSPHERES® Brand enteric-coated capsules pass intact through the stomach and dissolve in the specific pH environment of the small intestine, where they catalyze the hydrolysis of fats, starches and proteins.
Normally, pancreatic enzymes are secreted into the small intestine to help digest fats, proteins and starches. Enzyme supplements such as CREON® MINIMICROSPHERES® Brand Capsules are needed when disease or surgery prevents the normal flow of digestive enzymes. For example, in people with cystic fibrosis the exocrine (outward-secreting) glands, including the pancreas, produce a thick, sticky mucus. This mucus plugs the pancreatic ducts and prevents digestive enzymes from reaching the small intestine, so foods cannot be digested. CREON® MINIMICROSPHERES® Capsules substitute for the digestive enzymes.
CREON® MINIMICROSPHERES® 5•10•20 is a pancreatic enzyme supplement indicated for patients with pancreatic exocrine insufficiency, which is often associated with: cystic fibrosis; chronic pancreatitis; postpancreatectomy; postgastrointestinal bypass surgery; or ductal obstruction from neoplasm (e.g., of the pancreas or common bile duct).
CREON ® MINIMICROSPHERES® are contraindicated in the early stages of acute pancreatitis or in patients who are known to be hypersensitive to pork protein.
Should symptoms of hypersensitivity appear, discontinue medication and initiate symptomatic and supportive therapy if necessary.
The most frequently reported adverse reactions to pancreatic enzyme containing products are gastrointestinal in nature, which may include nausea, vomiting, bloating, cramping, constipation, or diarrhea. Less frequently, allergic-type reactions have also been observed. Very high doses of pancreatin have been associated with hyperuricosuria and hyperuricemia.
