Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Awards 2005 "Challenge Match" Donation
Funds to Support Lake of the Woods School Enrichment Program
Marietta, Ga. (December 16, 2005) – Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc. has awarded a $10,000 grant to Lake of the Woods (LOW) Independent School District (ISD) #390 again this year for use in supporting the Enrichment Program for Gifted and Talented Students at LOW School.
The grant is part of a “challenge match” program through which Solvay Pharmaceuticals matches community members’ donations to the Enrichment Program up to $10,000. Community members raised $11,932.72 for the program, and with the company’s $10,000 match – bringing the grand total to $21,932.72. Since the matching grant program began in 1999, Solvay Pharmaceuticals has contributed a total of $67,720 in support of the Enrichment Program.
Mike Dornhecker, Vice President of Manufacturing and Operations, and Jim Marken, Plant Manager for Solvay Pharmaceuticals, presented the donation to Connie Nelson, Superintendent, Lake of the Woods ISD #390, and Jenny Moorman, LOW School Enrichment Program Coordinator, at Solvay Pharmaceuticals’ Main Street facility.
“Solvay Pharmaceuticals is honored to play a pivotal role in the Enrichment Program’s continued success,” said Dornhecker. “Serving the youth of the communities we operate in is one of the pillars of our Community Action Team initiative, which targets organizations that support youth, health and older adults.”
The LOW School Enrichment Program provides unique learning opportunities and academic challenges for students who are gifted and/or academic or artistic high-achievers. An assessment of the current student population revealed that approximately 10-15 percent of students at LOW Schools would benefit from involvement in such an Enrichment Program.
