The CREON® Family Scholarship program is funded by Solvay Pharmaceuticals. Scholarships are awarded to students based on academic achievement, the ability to serve as a role model and financial need. All U.S. citizens with CF who will begin or continue higher education in the fall of 2004 are eligible to apply. The chosen recipients also are eligible to apply for additional scholarships at the end of each two-year award period.
“Our scholarship recipients are incredible role models for others living with CF,” said Harold H. Shlevin, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of Solvay Pharmaceuticals. “These young and courageous individuals have a desire for excellence that is inspiring, and we’re honored to enhance their educational pursuits.”
Since the program’s inception in 1993, Solvay Pharmaceuticals has awarded more than $1.6 million in scholarships. The company established the program as part of its Partners in CaringSM program. Partners in CaringSM provides education and support for patients and families affected by CF as well as to care providers at CF treatment centers across the United States. Solvay Pharmaceuticals markets the pancreatic enzyme supplement CREON® MINIMICROSPHERES® Capsules. Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and young adults in the United States. CF causes digestive and chronic lung problems that require frequent therapy.
CREON® MINIMICROSPHERES® is indicated for patients with pancreatic exocrine insufficiency which is often associated with cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, post pancreatectomy, post-gastrointestinal bypass surgery (e.g. billroth II gastroenterostomy), ductal obstruction from neoplasm (e.g. of the pancreas or common bile duct). The most frequently reported adverse reactions to pancreatic enzyme-containing products are gastrointestinal in nature which may include nausea, vomiting, bloating, cramping, constipation or diarrhea. Less frequently, allergic-type reactions have also been observed. Very high doses of pancreatin have been associated with hyperuricosuria and hyperuricemia.
