Over the years, the Solvay name has come to stand for scientific innovation, vision and integrity. Today’s Solvay Pharmaceuticals organization is rooted in its founding father’s passion for progress.
In 1863, Belgian scientist and industrialist Ernest Solvay founded Solvay S.A., of which Solvay Pharmaceuticals is a subsidiary corporation. Attesting to his highly regarded reputation in the scientific community, Ernest Solvay was also the renowned organizer of a landmark 1911 Council on Physics that assembled many of the day’s leading scientists – including Einstein, Curie, Planck and Rutherford.
Solvay Pharmaceuticals exemplifies Ernest Solvay’s legacy by establishing its own tradition of bringing innovative medical therapies to market. A prime example is CREON® MINIMICROSPHERES,® the first pancreatic extract to be prescribed for Cystic Fibrosis in 1900 and still marketed today in the United States.
A century later, Solvay Pharmaceuticals continues to demonstrate this legacy of innovation. An example from more recent years is the case of AndroGel®; Solvay Pharmaceuticals, with its wholly-owned subsidiary Unimed Pharmaceuticals, launched the first topical testosterone gel approved to treat men with low levels of this important hormone.
As a result of his dedication to science, Ernest Solvay’s scientific work and the company he formed have paved the way for much pharmaceutical-related success for today’s Solvay organization.
